"kulu se mama" is the heavy african tune that is so underappreciated. the jazz snobs never seem to want to admit that trane was heading into an afro-cuban direction. indicaters: the use of bata drums during performances, song titles like "ogunde" (on the LP "expression") and this heavy afro-percussive jam of a tune called "kulu se mama".
all the latino jazzers recognize this fact. see albums by angå diaz, conrad herwig, bobby matos, john santos, tito puente...this is just a handful of afro-cuban jazz artists who see the progression of coltrane toward percussion experiments and santeria study.
this is the tune to really hear it.
